Case Study 2:

Camphill Ghent

The Outcome

Camphill Ghent continues the Initiative’s mission to help their residents live in a supportive environment for aging in place. Two assisted living buildings with apartments on the second floor provide continuity of relationship between resident and staff. New independent living apartments and larger townhouses appeal to both Camphill co-workers and the surrounding community target market. An assisted living neighborhood is attached to an independent living apartment grouping to encourage care for one another and stronger personal relationships. Anthropomorphic design principles connect residents with the outdoors via expansive, plentiful windows; improve a person’s mood and tranquility through the use of an intentional color palette, and create an overall building geometry of irregular angles in form and corridor configuration for openness and “possibility.”
