Lessons Learned

With a budget of $120 per square foot, the list of goals seemed impossible for the price. However, with thoughtful planning, coordination, team spirit and hard work, the team was able to cost-effectively reuse a significant number of materials from the existing building. The reuse of materials that were already 70 years old is a testament to the idea that, in terms of life assessment, quality materials are less expensive in the long run. However, the real benefit and immeasureable value of the reuse—beyond the durability, lower first cost and reduced maintenance cost— is the cultural memory to the historic building that was maintained.
