Perkins Eastman | Brooklyn Supreme and Family Courthouse

Brooklyn Supreme and Family Courthouse

Brooklyn, New York
Perkins Eastman designed a new 32-story 1.1M sf courthouse for the Brooklyn Supreme and Family Courts located at MetroTech Center in downtown Brooklyn. The complex program includes 50 Supreme Court courtrooms; 24 Family Court courtrooms; 10 hearing rooms; 750-person jury assembly room; 300-person detention facility; and offices and support spaces for the courts' administrative functions. The largest new court building in New York, it will house numerous other city offices, including the Administration for Children’s Services, Probation, NYPD, Department of Corrections, Legal Aid, Victims Services, Corporation Counsel, and the Health Department, among others. It will also contain 140,000 sf of speculative office space.

The building was designed into a predetermined zoning/massing envelope and planned to separate each of the three functions (Supreme Court, Family Court, and commercial office floors) with distinct entrances, elevator cores, and security systems, as well as public and judges' circulation systems. Perkins Eastman provided feasibility, programming, and court planning, as well as full architectural and interior design services.

The project was developed as a turnkey public/private partnership between the City of New York and Forest City Ratner Companies.
