Perkins Eastman | Manhattan College Student Commons

Manhattan College: Student Commons

The Bronx, New York
In a joint venture with Edward I. Mills & Associates, Perkins Eastman completed a new Student Commons for Manhattan College. Located at the campus crossroads along an active pedestrian route, the 70,000 sf five-story building was designed to generate a spirited architectural design that reflects the myriad purposes and functions within the building and that represents Manhattan College’s long history of tradition and innovation.

The building’s dynamic identity welcomes visitors, enhances and supports student activities, and encourages the interaction of students and faculty while it meets the demands of an increasing on-campus student population, providing much-needed recreation and informal gathering space; wellness activities and support services; multipurpose meeting spaces; a Barnes & Noble college store; multiple dining venues; and student support and activity offices.

The building was designed to achieve LEED Gold certification. The façade is highly efficient, while the location of fenestration responds to the building’s solar orientation. A partial green roof lowers stormwater runoff and reduces solar heat gain. Use of natural lighting, selection of interior materials, and adequate natural ventilation and lighting were selected with energy savings and users’ well-being in mind.
