Hyman, Phelps & McNamara

Washington, District of Columbia
Perkins Eastman designed and implemented a phased interior renovation for Hyman, Phelps & McNamara, the largest firm in the country dedicated to food and drug law. We fulfilled our client’s objective of creating a more collaborative environment, more versatile conference space, and a more modern aesthetic.

Our strategy included designing a monumental staircase to literally and visually connect the eleventh and twelfth floors. The staircase ties together public areas to support a flexible working environment and creates a sense of place. It also encourages spontaneous interactions. Furthering the idea of informal collaboration spaces, Perkins Eastman also designed an open library, communal table, and working café.

In addition to meeting the goal of providing added connectivity between floors and common spaces, Perkins Eastman made the existing space more welcoming and functional. Opening the existing lobby to invite in more natural light was a key element of the renovation. Adding an operable partition and moveable tables to the existing boardroom met a request for more conference space versatility and flexibility. Seamless transitions between and coordination of existing and new finishes and furniture were carefully curated. Featured material elements throughout the space include porcelain and solid surface finishes, custom millwork, and a neutral color palette with pops of accent color.

The design team met the tight, complex schedule developed for the in-place renovation with minimal day-to-day disturbance of the staff.
