St. John's University: John J. DaSilva Academic Center

St. John’s University: John J. DaSilva Academic Center

Staten Island, NY

The new heart of the campus boasts a tech center and labs in a monumental structure visible from all directions.

After performing a master planning assessment, St. John’s University selected a site that helped transform informal open space into a new collegiate quadrangle for the campus. Designed to transform the collection of buildings into a cohesive campus, the new academic building is one of the largest structures on campus and highly visible from all entry points. The design is sensitive to the scale of the surrounding buildings and the impression of the building on campus. The location and design of the structure help make it a true center for the campus and give it a sense of unity. The steel-framed building addresses the campus’ need for a state-of-the-art classroom space and provides large computer classrooms and an open access lab. The structure houses a tech center, general classrooms, a science lab, communications lab, and faculty offices and includes informal student gathering areas, both inside and out.
