Eric Birkhauser

"Architecture falls somewhere between science and art, serving as a bridge between technology and culture, human and planet. At its best, it’s a humble vehicle for bringing people together and celebrating the human experience. Great work acknowledges where we’ve been and is full of feeling and emotion, reminding us of our need for optimism."

Eric’s strong curiosity for the kinetics of humanity and poetics of structure has shaped transportation and bridge architecture projects into international-award-winning destinations. This experience extends to his work on transit stations, unique civic structures, mixed-use high-rise, and large-scale commercial buildings and facilities.

Eric is a Principal Owner of VIA—A Perkins Eastman Studio and leads the firm’s Bridges & Infrastructure group. With more than fifteen years of experience as a Project Designer and Project Manager and an additional five years of prior experience as a Design-Build Contractor, his combined experience makes him an effective design lead on projects at all scales. An exceptional collaborator, he’s worked with engineering teams on more than thirty signature bridge projects across North America.

Eric brings a holistic vision to sustainability and building performance, leveraging his training in ecological design and agroecology. His passion for innovation includes industrial design and the exploration of material and form for bicycles, furniture, lighting, and urban objects.

Our Perkins Eastman

In addition to expanding the firm’s reach into the realm of unique civic structures, Eric is focused on improving the design process and resources within the firm.  A forever student of the world and impassioned technologist, he is always seeking new tools for transforming our common understanding and approach to human-centric design.
