This new mixed-use ambulatory care building is a needed presence in Brooklyn’s Cobble Hill community, with services geared toward the local population. It offers a stand-alone emergency department, surgical and procedural suites, diagnostic imaging, cancer care, and physician practices, plus amenities such as rooftop terraces. The complex also includes a compounding pharmacy, rapid-response lab, and other clinical and building support.
Located just inside the Cobble Hill Historic District and parallel to an exit off the Brookly-Queens Expressway, the ambulatory-care center is highly visible and establishes an important street edge along Brooklyn’s prominent Atlantic Avenue. Given these characteristics, the structure needed to stand out but also integrate within its context—a modern, high-tech destination within a cherished historic community. Therefore, its sleek glass curtain walls incorporate terracotta panels that speak to the surrounding brick buildings. The massing and scales change along the L-shaped building as well, responding to street traffic, pedestrians, and the privacy needs of the patients inside. A covered walkway protects patients from inclement weather and wind, creating a gracious entry sequence as a commitment to provide the best possible patient experience that starts before one walks through the door. Floor-to-ceiling glass admits natural light throughout the interior, furthermore, and admits views of Cobble Hill and the Manhattan skyline beyond, helping orient visitors and patients and also providing light and scenery to reduce anxieties and improve outcomes.
