The vision for the new University of Illinois Springfield Library Commons is fully aligned with the university’s mission to provide a uniquely learner-centered educational experience both in and out of the classroom through active learning, meaningful research, and impactful civic engagement that prepares graduates to contribute fully to society. The facility brings the Center for Academic Success, the Career Development Center, and Information Technology Services together under the library’s roof to collaborate on developing integrated services that will afford a unique learning experience and contribute to learners’ success. The facility will offer a range of flexible spaces to support different learning styles and needs, including group and individual study areas, computer stations, open seating, and a large classroom. An ascending spiral, representing a student’s educational journey and the process of discovery, is the basis of the Library Commons’ outward appearance as well as its internal organization.
Located on the southeast corner of the central campus quad and directly north of the Student Union, it will be a dynamic, engaging environment that draws students in and inspires them throughout their educational journeys. In line with the university’s commitment to sustainability, the library is designed for energy efficiency and will be constructed to meet LEED Gold certification. Its completion date is anticipated for the fall of 2027.
