The John F. Milligan Library Complex and Arts Arena at Ohio Wesleyan University activates the university’s central JAYwalk pedestrian way and transforms the existing mid-century Beeghly Library into a comprehensive academic support and creativity hub at the heart of campus, adjacent to the soon-to-be renovated Chappelear Theater. Transparent façade treatments prevail across the renovations and new construction, shedding light into the campus’ new heart.
The library design features a central network of community-building spaces, a variety of study areas, technology-rich classrooms, a gallery, and a multi-purpose event space with a new city-side entrance and landscape. It emphasizes natural light and highlights rare and special collections. These elements will join two new centers to be hosted in this facility: the Smith Center for Faculty Excellence, which focuses on faculty support and development, and the Palmer Center for First-Generation Student Success, which provides support for students who are the first in their families to attend college.
The theater renovation breathes new life into the Department of Fine Arts with its artist studios, classrooms, and gallery spaces alongside contemporary classrooms and collaborative study areas. It also adds a new flexible music rehearsal and recital hall addition, providing a multipurpose space for both performances and rehearsal for the Music Department.
These additions position the library as a central space for immersive learning, creation, research, and community engagement. The library/arts complex will be powered by clean energy via OWU’s new solar energy system. Completion is scheduled for January, 2027.
