Sung Shik Kim

AIA

Principal

For over 30 years, Sung has developed a deep expertise in multifamily residential developments and community-based planning. While he has worked across all phases of the design process, he especially loves the early stages of project where the massing is first conceived and shaped. This conceptual design phase, where the pure form of a building takes shape, appeals to both his artistic sensibility and analytical rigor. It demands not only a refined appreciation for proportion, scale, and geometric order, but also a thorough understanding of zoning regulations and building code. For Sung, true creative fulfillment lies in reconciling design aspirations with technical constraints to unlock the full potential of a site. Recognized as an expert in New York City zoning, Sung has assessed the development potential of hundreds of properties across all five boroughs, and has completed over 10,000 units of new construction.

With Sung’s strong track record of navigating complex zoning challenges, optimizing site strategies and managing discretionary land-use actions, he leads the effort to move projects efficiently from concept to approval process. Sung has also taken on the challenge of demystifying the NYC Zoning Resolution for the firm’s emerging staff.
