The Monrovia Community Center renovation reimagines a civic landmark by blending historic character with contemporary design. Rather than renovating the entire facility, the team adopted a strategic approach—removing half of the original structure to enable design flexibility while preserving the heritage building, which for decades housed the city’s Daily News Post, as the centerpiece of the new community center. A new event complex to the side wraps around a semi-private courtyard, creating vibrant indoor-outdoor experiences that foster community engagement.
The renovation and new addition blend historic charm with modern sophistication, creating an inclusive space that honors Monrovia’s diverse community and rich heritage. Warm woods, natural stone, and organic textures echo the rugged beauty of the San Gabriel Mountains, creating a grounded and inviting atmosphere. The design intentionally frames views of the adjacent Library Park, where the arch over the library’s entrance echoes those along the center’s new façade. Walls of windows along the addition’s Monroe Room also allow direct views from Palm Avenue and Library Park through to the landscaped courtyard and the expansive Kay Dalton Hall on the other side.
Renovations to the existing building honor the Daily News Post’s original footprint with a Heritage Lobby and veranda overlooking the streetscape. Meeting rooms and city offices fill the rest of the space. And in response to the city’s commitment to disaster preparedness and sustainability, the structure will support photovoltaic arrays coupled with a two-day battery storage system, enabling uninterrupted operations during extended power outages. The design also emphasizes acoustic comfort, strong connections to outdoor spaces, water conservation, and the selection of healthy, durable materials.
Anchored in social responsibility, the center serves as a welcoming civic hub that honors Monrovia’s heritage while supporting authentic connections and a sense of belonging for all residents. This thoughtful integration of past and present not only honors the city’s rich history but also creates a welcoming, future-ready space for community connection and celebration.
