Comprising three city blocks, Main Street Square creates a civic room, integrates a new light rail system, and brings improved public space to downtown Houston. Prior to joining Perkins Eastman, the EE&K team designed the square as part of their larger master plan for Main Street. Bold paving patterns, shaded seating areas, and rich landscaping create an exciting new vision for the public realm, one where Houstonians can connect with one another and enjoy easy access to other parts of the city. At the center of the square, a choreographed water feature composed of arched water jets is activated by the motion of the trains passing through. This dramatic fountain carries forth the tradition of water features in Houston that symbolically connect the city to the surrounding bayous and completes a holistic design for a new neighborhood hub.
