Lowell High School

Lowell, MA

A reimagined high school campus that supports collaboration, inclusion, and academic flexibility within a historic urban setting.

One of the nation’s oldest public high schools, Lowell High School is being transformed to serve a diverse student body representing more than 50 countries. The campus sits adjacent to the Lowell National Historical Park, organized around the Merrimack Canal—an artifact of the city’s industrial heritage that runs through the site. New construction and restored historic buildings create a campus that honors Lowell’s past while supporting the diverse learning needs of today’s students.

The design team integrated new academic and athletic facilities with the historic structures. A new five-story freshman academy anchors a prominent street corner, establishing civic presence while prioritizing daylight and natural ventilation. New pedestrian bridges span the canal, connecting buildings and creating campus cohesion. A new quad adjacent to shared dining and athletic spaces provides an outdoor commons for the school community.

Interior design emphasizes flexibility and collaboration, with clustered learning environments supporting interdisciplinary teaching and shared workspaces. The project serves students across a range of academic programs, language backgrounds, and learning needs—strengthening Lowell High’s role as an inclusive community anchor in a city shaped by immigration and industry.
