Mayo Clinic Destination Medical Center

Rochester, MN

An ambitious master plan reshapes the character, culture, and long-term economic health of Rochester as it grows along with its largest employer, The Mayo Clinic.

As a global center for health and healing, The Mayo Clinic’s continued growth depends on the health of its hometown. As a result, Rochester’s Destination Medical Center is the largest economic development project in the history of the State of Minnesota. Perkins Eastman designed a visionary and achievable master plan that will transform Rochester’s downtown skyline and streetscape to evolve with the clinic’s expansion. Market-driven and flexible, the 20-year, multi-phase plan allows Mayo Clinic to incrementally embrace and leverage Rochester’s evolving demographics and development opportunities. After studying the essential characteristics in the six districts the comprise the city’s core, the design team worked collaboratively to develop a vision to expand Mayo’s mission by enhancing each district. The development plan combines the aspirations of both the Mayo Clinic and the City of Rochester by integrating new programs that support business, residential, and institutional uses to create flexible and inclusive spaces accessible to all. Positioning the city and its largest employer to be a regional beacon of sustainable design and development that fosters healthy living and working environments, the plan will enhance the lives of locals, attract new residents and top talent, and encourage visits from people across the region and beyond.
