Originally built in 1951 and expanded in 1985, USD’s Copley Library was in need of a 21st-century update. Our design team reconceived the library’s interior with new programmatic elements, including collaborative study and active learning areas; a new entry point and improved circulation/accessibility; re-envisioned digital and physical special collections, display, and exhibit spaces; and reconfigured staff areas. The renovated library provides spaces for study and research, and it staff to be a collaborative partner in knowledge creation and dissemination. The overall result promotes and highlights the value and importance of research activities for the university. It also allows the library to be a platform for collaborative programs and services that promote academic rapport and engagement with the university’s students.
This project was designed by Pfeiffer prior to joining Perkins Eastman.
