For decades, the venerable Zayed Sports City Stadium has been more than the primary sport and entertainment venue of the United Arab Emirates. A collaboration between Perkins Eastman and MEIS Architects, the vision for the stadium’s renewal celebrates its important history and urban location while advancing modern building technology as well as sport and entertainment programming, concept, and design. The team designed networks of light comprised of the solid concrete arches and ornate steel filigree found throughout the original structure. A raised plaza surrounds the stadium, accessible by varied sequences of stairs, ramps, and complemented by landscaping and indoor retail and commercial spaces. Together with local adjacent retail districts, the stepped plaza forms a multilevel, double-sided corridor that functions year-round and features indoor access to the stadium.
